TVR are pleased to announce that they are extending their sponsorship of Ebbw Vale RFC for a second season as primary sponsor.
Just last week the public launch of the new TVR model was held at the Goodwood Revival, where the car was unveiled for the first time to the press and public to great acclaim.
Commenting on the news, John Chasey, Operations Director said, “It is our pleasure to continue our sponsorship of Ebbw Vale RFC for a second year and we wish them well in the season ahead.”
Steelmen Chairman, Jon Jones is delighted at the continued sponsorship of such a prestigious brand and what will shortly become an anchor employer in Ebbw Vale.
More details on the new TVR model which will be built in Ebbw Vale can be found on www.tvr.co.uk
“We are saddened to hear that Ebbw Vale supporter Colin Herridge passed away last week from the injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident a couple of days earlier. Colin was a popular ‘Addict’ and Steelmen supporter who will be very much missed by all of us. We send our condolences to his family.”
The funeral is 10am Friday 22nd at St. David’s Church, Carmeltown, Beaufort, returning to the Welfare, EVRFC, afterwards.

Ebbw Vale will now play their first home league game of the new season, against Pontypridd, on Friday, September 1st kicking off at 7:30pm, rather than the original date of Saturday, September 2nd. This is to avoid a clash with Ebbw Vale Cricket Club.
We were all saddened by the news that Ray Knott, an outstanding centre three-quarter for Ebbw Vale in the 1950s and 60s, has passed away. We send our deepest sympathies to Ray’s family.
Roy Lewis recalls tha, in February 1957, a combined Ebbw Vale and Newbridge side played and defeated the South African Universities and, representing Newbridge, Ray partnered our Graham Powell in the centre. Not long after that he joined us and was a reserve in the conbined Ebbw Vale and Abertillery team that played the Springboks at Ebbw on 29th November 1960. On both occasions he was described in the programmes as a colliery worker.
The funeral service is at Newbridge Catholic Church, Ashfield Road, Newbridge on Friday 25 August at 11.15. Service at Croesyceiliog Crematorium is at 1230.

It is with a degree of symmetry that the choice of Head Coach Lee Davies to lead the Steelmen in the new season is entering his seventh season at the club following the record seven years as captain of the departed Damian Hudd.
The immensely popular Ronny Kynes will lead the Steelmen into a new era and will bring to the role his hugely competitive nature, that has been so prominent in the rise of the club since its relegation in 2010. Ronny is the epitome of what the club is about; displaying talent, hard work and pride in the badge that has driven him to go above and beyond the call of duty. Not many people will know that Ronny played the last 6 games of the Premiership Champions’ season with a broken jaw, displaying true steel for the cause. Having recently reached 150 games for the club, and with his scoring exploits leading to the now famous “Catch’n’Kynes” attracting the attention of the rugby press in Wales (although it was actually coined, erhem, by our webmaster), Ronny is looking forward to taking the Steelmen back to the top of the table through leading by example and driving standards off the field, where he has always had a huge influence on the squad, coaches and club officials.
Ronny said that following in the footsteps not only of Damien Hudd, but also Mark Jones, Kingsley Jones, Gareth Howls and Arthur Lewis was ‘awesome’. “This is a very proud moment for me and my family. I just hope I can be even half as successful as Huddy, and I wish him all the best for his new role with Brynmawr. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of captaincy, and the up-coming season with the boys.”
New skipper – Ronny Kynes
Ebbw Vale RFC are pleased to support the charity Shine Cymru this coming season.
Kate Steele, Shine’s CEO said, “I am thrilled that Ebbw Vale RFC has chosen to support Shine Cymru this year. Working at grass roots level to build the community and develop opportunities through rugby is key to what the Club does. In many ways this reflects the approach and work that Shine Cymru does through providing support, information and advice across our community of individuals with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and their families in Wales. The partnership will provide important links and much needed funds to further our work in Blaenau Gwent.”
Shine provides specialist support from before birth and throughout the life of anyone living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, as well as to parents, families, carers and professional care staff. Shine enables people to get the best out of life.
https://www.shinecharity.org.uk/
Paul ‘Wally’ Walbyoff, a 30 year long supporter this season, and his family have found the support of Shine invaluable. Paul and Liz’s daughter was diagnosed a year ago with Spina Bifida and along with medical help and guidance they’ve also appreciated the opportunity to network with other affected families. Fuller details of EVRFC supported events will be published in due course but in the meantime Paul and his family are raising money this coming weekend with a sponsored walk. Awaiting update – Season tickets announcement soon.
As part of the squad’s preparation for the Principality Premiership season that begins on August 26th, Ebbw Vale are pleased to announce that they will play three pre-season friendly fixtures. The first sees a repeat of last summer when the Steelmen make the short trip to take on the Foxes of Bedlinog, on August 5th.
The following Saturday, August 12th, the journey will be a lot longer, when Ebbw visit Chinnor RFC, based in Thame, Oxfordshire. Chinnor play in English National League 2 South, and missed out on promotion on points difference last season.
The 19th sees Ebbw meet up with old friends at one of Wales’ greatest clubs, Maesteg RFC, featuring surely the most spectacular away journy of all! The Old Parish currently play in Division One West Central and will be keen to give the Steelmen a tough afternoon.
The Annual General Meetings of both the rugby club and Steelmen Rugby Limited will be held in the clubhouse on 11th July at 7pm. Please come along to support this.
If you have items for the agenda please send them, by email, to companysecretary@evrfc.co.uk before 6th July.
The agenda will be published 7th July.
The WRU Board has confirmed changes to the Principality Premiership for the next two seasons in order to meet the changing needs of the clubs.
In the first half of the season, the 16-team semi-professional league will be split geographically into two east and west eight-team leagues, with the clubs playing each other home and away. The clubs will be split into east and west Wales leagues with RGC 1404 joining the west Wales league. This will guarantee more meaningful local derbies up to the New Year before all teams come together for the second half of the season.
Each club will then play the other 15 teams either home or away. At the split, points will be allocated to clubs based on league positions so the winners of the east and west leagues will go into the second half of the season with eight points, the clubs in second place will carry seven points into the 16-team league down to the eighth placed clubs who will carry one point, this will ensure all clubs remain in the race to be crowned Premier Division Winners. Every club will have a guaranteed 29 league matches during the season. Principality Premiership clubs will continue to work with the Regions to select Regional Premiership Select XVs for the British & Irish Cup, while the Foster’s Challenge Cup will not take place.
Following an extensive consultation process with the Principality Premiership clubs, the changes have been made in order to help support the clubs from a rugby, financial and supporters’ experience perspective and to fit into the national and regional pathway programme. There will be no play-offs, with the table-topping club at the end of the season crowned Principality Premiership champion in a straight-forward league system.
Ebbw Vale’s fixtures can be found on the fixtures and results page.
A very enjoyable dinner was held on Friday night to mark the end of the 2016-17 season and to present the various awards. Joe Franchi’s excellent season was recognised by the supporters and his teammates as he scooped the Denzil Williams Players’ Player of the Year and Ebbw Addicts’ Player of the Year. Jon Davies, who joined from Ynysddu RFC mid-season, took the Addicts’ Most Promising Player prize.
Rhys Clarke was named as the Clive Burgess Man of Steel, and he and Chris Thomas received caps to mark 100 appearances since joining from Penallta RFC.
The Addicts chose Damien Hudd as their Ivor Evans Clubman of the Year, and he also received the Gareth Howls Captain’s Award. He and Gethin Robinson, who retired at the end of the campaign, were recipients of Special Awards.
Volunteer of the Year was club pastor the Reverend Geoff Waggett, an ever present figure over many seasons.
the irrepressible Ronny Kynes again bagged the Try Scorer award and Bath bound Josh Lewis was Highest Points Scorer.
Many congratulations to all the winners, and to the volunteers and Welfare staff who worked so hard to make the evening such a success.
(Photographs will be added later.)
EVRFC Dinner and Presentation Evening
Friday 16th June
Meet 6.30pm for 7.00pm start
(smart casual wear)
Outstanding money must be paid before event. The Addicts will be at the club from 6.00pm until 8.30pm on Thursday evening to collect outstanding payment.
Ebbw Vale are delighted to secure the services of Dai Jones; other than 4 months at Bedwas he has been a constant squad presence over the last 7 seasons. Dai put in some superb tactical performances during the last season and we all look forward to more of the same off the field. Dai has always been a key element in keeping spirits high in the club and is looking forward to driving activity both on and off the pitch.
Beddau product Carl Lewis joins the club and will bring pace and quick passing to the role. Carl has trained with the club previously and played in the home pre season fixture against a very powerful London Welsh in 2015. He is really looking forward to the opportunity of playing in the Premiership and has previously represented Wales and Blues U18’s.
The long serving Chris Thomas is enjoying a successful season in New Zealand and is now training with a feeder team to Provincial rugby. At the moment it is not clear when Chris will be returning and we will keep all informed as time moves forward.
The other Lewis twin Rob is moving on to play at Moseley as they look to regain their place in the English Championship. Rob was a strong and committed performer during his time back at the club and we wish him success at this new club
The club can also confirm that it has a number of trial players attending training across a number of positions as it rebuilds its squad. Further updates will be provided later on in the summer.
Full Back Shirt
Once again for a 6th season Abergavenny product Dan Haymond will start with a firm grip on the 15 shirt. Dan has proven himself to be a skilled and dependable player who is committed to the club and he will be looking to get close to 150 appearances during the season
Dan will be challenged for the 15 shirt by Garyn Payne, another product of the Aberdare club who spent last season at Bedwas. Well known to our coaches through his time at Coleg y Cymoedd, the 6ft 2” Payne will bring a physical presence to the role. Garyn also possesses a big kicking game and is comfortable on the wing but sees himself as a 15
Second Row
There are two new faces in this area with Andrew Mann and Gavin Bilton joining January signing Lance Randall.
Andrew played several games for the Steelmen in Division 1 East and impressed with his aggressive carrying and pace around the field. At the time he was unable to commit the required time to training and so remained at the Brynmawr club where he has continued to impress with a number of Premiership and Championship clubs keen to sign him. The 27 year old has opted for his local club and is looking forward to the support at games which he described as “incredible”.
He will be joined by Gavin Bilton who is 6ft 7” and just under 20 stone. Gavin has premiership experience with Bridgend but his rugby has been curtailed by the fact he is a serving soldier based in the London area. He will leave the army in June and will be able to fully commit himself to the training regime required by the coaches. The more observant Ebbw Addicts would have seen his lineout prowess for Caerphilly in the cup final appearance at the Principality Stadium in Mid April. Gavin is another player that is excited to be joining the Steelmen and is looking forward to playing behind our front row
January signing Lance Randall has quickly endeared himself to the Ebbw Addicts with some robust and skilled performances in the second row and on occasions the 6 shirt. Lance is Welsh qualified and went through the Dragons Academy system before playing for Cinderford in his home area. Lance is another who having been out with a knee injury for a year will benefit from a full pre season and all expect him to make a significant mark in the coming season
The club also expects to have another signing complete by the start of training at the end of June and will also be able to call upon the services of lineout expert Ashley Sweet when available from the Dragons.
Departing after 5 seasons with the Steelmen is Joe Bartlett who leaves in search of more regular rugby. The amiable giant Joe has been a pleasure to have at the club and has been a good clubman who has let no-one down when he has been called upon. Joe, who has great rugby skills for a big man, is likely to play for Newport and all at the club would like to thank him for his services. Hopefully, we will see him in our colours again.
There is mixed news in this area with 4 players remaining and 3 moving on.
Dai Langdon will once again cover the 12 and 10 shirts and is fast closing in on 100 appearances for the Steelmen. The coaches will be looking for Dai to provide the distribution for a wider game and to be able to support the younger 10’s in pressure situations.
Competing with Dai for the 12 shirt will be Dom Franchi who has provided some superb performances in the last month after being out for 15 months with a knee ligament injury. Dom’s defensive strength and carrying ability will ensure that the 12 shirt is highly competitive
The 13 jersey will see Srdan Majkic and James Lewis complete with each other. Srdan has steadily improved after joining the club around the Christmas period and is expected to benefit from a wider game plan where his pace and passing ability can be better utilized. Srdan has proved himself to be a capable and reliable operator and will be looking to improve further in the coming season.
29-year-old James Lewis, having rejoined after the sad demise of London Welsh, played his rugby on the wing where the team had struggled for consistency. He will now concentrate on the centre position where he has played most of his rugby in the last 6 years in the English Championship and Premiership. James his highly experienced and will be part of the players’ senior leadership group and has been capped by Wales at 16,18,19 20 and 7’s level and has also appeared for the Barbarians.
Leaving the club is recent arrival Gareth Maule as he has taken up a role as a Sports agent that excludes him from playing Semi or Professional rugby. In his short stay Gareth added obvious class and nous to the backline and we wish him well in his new career.
After 3 seasons Brynmawr product Nathan Preece will return to the club where he started. After overcoming hamstring issues he has been an almost ever present in the Ebbw backline. His powerful defence and carrying will be missed on the field; off the field it will be a lot quieter as he has never believed in silence! We thank him for his great service and hope to see him at the club when time and other commitments allow
With Cardiff have previously publicized the signing of Adam Jones, the club would like to acknowledge the great part he played in our return to the Premiership and subsequent title win. We all wish Adam, a powerful and skillful centre, the best of luck at his new club and hope that the injuries that kept him out all last season and parts of the other 2 seasons are finally behind him and he gets to once more enjoy his rugby.
The club would also like to note the contribution that Jordan Howells, who left for Newbridge in late January and is rumoured to be joining Bargoed for the coming season, made at the Steelmen. Jordan joined as an 18 year old in our final year in the Championship and won a player of the month award in April 2014 as we made the play off finals after finishing second in the league. Jordan is a powerful ball carrier on the field and a great character off it, and we wish him well wherever he plays next season.
Back Row Stability
There are not too many changes in the Steelmen back row roster but one new arrival that is making the journey along the A465 is Merthyr and Coleg y Cymoedd product Owen Jones. A fast raiding, ball handling open side Owen will fit into the 15 man game approach and at 6ft 1” and 90kg will not lack physical presence and will challenge hard for the 7 shirt. Owen has been capped for Wales at 7’s and impressed in the Blues Region BIC team and is joining Ebbw Vale to take an opportunity to play on a more regular basis in the Premiership.
Owen Jones
Owen with complete with fans’ favourite Ronny Kynes as he enters his 7th season with the Steelmen. Ronny reached 150 games during the 2016-17 campaign and his character on and off the field have played a major part in the Steelmen success story.
Ronny will be joined by his close friend and work colleague Cameron Regan who will look to put an injury ravaged season behind him and once again add his high octane and skillful performances to the Steelmen’s forwards. The team have missed his skill and character in all aspects of the club and all will be delighted to welcome him back.
Another back row stalwart to remain loyal to the Steelmen cause is Rhys Clarke who completed 100 games in his fifth season with the Steelmen. Despite being hampered by a shoulder injury Rhys has delivered strong and committed performances in the second row, 6 and 8 shirts. The Penallta product is looking for an injury free season and continuing to enjoy his rugby at Eugene Cross Park
Two players who joined in January are committed to the Steelmen, Jonathan Davies and Mike Preece. Jon made a big impact with his pace, strong carrying and aggression in the Fosters Cup and in subsequent Premiership games. He produced excellent performances in the 4, 6 and 8 shirt that also clearly showed his try-scoring prowess picking up 4 tries in a handful of games. With a full pre season behind him, all at the club expect him to be a major influence in the new season.
Mike has made a few appearance in the Fosters Cup and from the bench in league games after joining from Risca. He has displayed a real aptitude for the physical work of the back row and is a young player that will develop throughout the coming season
Rory Pitman, having departed the club at the end of January through injury and mutual agreement, is likely to ply his trade in Jersey and we wish him well for the future
Jack Goodey will also be leaving the club after joining in late November and we wish him success with his rugby career
In what was a first opportunity for many of our new signings to show their form in an Ebbw kit, the Steelmen’s 7-a-side squad came away from Parc-y-Scarlets as winnerss of the Heineken National 7s Plate. Ebbw lost their first match to eventual runners up Aberavon, but showed signs of what was to come in turning around a 21-0 half time deficit and scoring 19 points after the break, finally losing 29-19. Ebbw won a tight contest against Bargoed, 19-15, then showed some magic touches in another close win, 26-20 over Bedwas. The young Steelmen saved the best for last, though, scorching past Llanelli 34-7 with tries by Toby Fricker, Andy Evans, Jon Davies and Carl Lewis.
The squad was:
Andy Evans, Lewis Dennett, Calum Hall, Toby Fricker, Stefan Thomas, Srdan Majkic, Jonathan Davies, Garyn Payne, Tom Hopppe, Luke Prankerd, Kristian Palmer, Carl Lewis.
Many thanks to Beddau RFC, Rogerstone RFC and Newport Gwent Dragons for their support and cooperation.
After 7 trophy laden seasons as Captain, 36 year-old Damien Hudd has made the very tough decision to step down as Captain, and from Premiership rugby, to return to the Brynmawr club from which he joined the Steelmen. He will take up the role of player coach as he begins the next chapter of what has been a great rugby career.
An avid rugby watcher and keen student of the game, Damien has already gained his Level 2 coaching qualifications, impressing WRU Coach Development staff with his delivery and knowledge. He will now look to gain coaching experience and take his Level 3 qualification in the near future and we fully expect to see him return to Eugene Cross Park in a coaching capacity at some point in the future.
Damien was a junior professional for the club in the professional era where he was seen as a future Steelmen star with older supporters remembering him playing a superb game in Edinburgh that saw him up against former All Black and current Bath coach Todd Blackadder. The first signs of his ability as a captain were recognized at this time as he led Wales U19’s on several occasions.
For various reasons it was several years later that Damien returned to the Steelmen colours, having spent a short period at Cross Keys but mainly plying his trade at his hometown club of Brynmawr. During this time he also played a lot of rugby league and was capped by Wales at both Amateur and Professional level, a major achievement for an amateur player in a rugby union heartland. It was during the relegation season that Damien played 2 games for us in March and April after being persuaded to help his old club out. It was clear from these performances that he was still more than capable of playing high-level rugby and had the ability to drive performances of those around him. Damien left the field with a fractured cheek-bone, but incoming Chairman Jon Jones ensured that he was looked after by the club, realising that this was a player that the club would need going forward.
That summer, Damien returned to the club and, in what was one of many great decisions the coaching duo of Neil Edwards and Jason Strange made, he was appointed Captain. His rugby ability and toughness were needed in equal measures in what, at times, could be a brutal Division 1 East with everyone wanting to prove a point against a club who, 10 years earlier, had been playing European Cup Rugby. Damien led from the front in every match he played and inspired those around him, and the Ebbw Addicts who loved his effort for the badge. The supporters particularly liked the Damien specials where the opposition’s main ball carrier would get tackled with bone shuddering force that lifted the crowd and his team but left opposition teams nervously looking for the big man and hoping to avoid him in open play.
At this point no one expected Damien to break a club record and captain the club for a record 7 consecutive seasons, dominating the lower divisions for 4 seasons as ring fencing prevented the return to the Premiership of the Steelmen. These 7 seasons saw Damien surpass the club legend Gareth Howls’ record as a 4 times captain as well as other great Steelmen captains such as Arthur Lewis, Denzil Williams, Phil Gardener, Neil Robinson and Kingsley Jones. This record is even more remarkable when one understands that Damien has suffered severe knee ligament injuries which would have ended most careers, but through his mental toughness and love of playing, he rarely missed games or left the field early in the last 7 seasons except for the intervention of the odd referee and another knee injury in the second year of Division 1 East.
Watching Damien lifting the Premiership Trophy for the Steelmen last year was a special moment for all, and meant a huge amount to Damien – particularly after the loss the previous season to the same club, Pontypridd, at the self styled ‘House of Pain’ of Sardis Road. The performances in that season saw Damien awarded the Premiership Player of the Year, a richly deserved award that no one could argue with. He had been nominated in the top 3 for that very same award the previous season.
It is worth noting the success he has led and personally had at this point:
Division 1 East Champions 2010/11 and 2011/12
National Championship Champions 2012/13 and 2013/14
National Cup Semi Finalists – drawn game – out on tries scored
Premiership Runners Up 2014/15
Premiership Champions 2015/16
Premiership Tier 17th place 2016/17
From the club he has been given the Man of Steel Award, Player of the Year and Captain’ Award. He has scored 12 tries in 160 games during the period.
It is always a difficult time when a key player moves on, doubly so when it is a captain but I’m sure all connected to Ebbw Vale RFC will thank Damien for his fantastic service and truly memorable moments.
A message from Damien
What can one man say about so many? Well it started nearly 8 years ago when I still felt young enough for a challenge, big enough to think I was hard and hadn’t spent all my money on tattoos.
8 years ago I made the decision to leave my great club Brynmawr and join the club that I’d always thought, what if and but maybe, so I took the jump, a leap of faith in a club that had so much history, passion and desire, desire to get back to where they belonged.
I joined with massive amounts of nerves and not much else. I knew it would be hard even just to make the cut, I never knew that it would lead to something that I will hold so special and close to my heart. Captain, captain Damien Hudd of Ebbw Vale, The Steelmen! What a Ring to it!
There are so many individuals to thank for my time at the club: the backroom staff who without those guys the club wouldn’t run, the amazing coaches I’ve had the pleasure to work with over my time at Ebbw – Lee Davies, Jason Strange, Nelly to name a few – the supporters who I have one word for: MAGIC! You have been our voice. There has to be a special mention to Rhys Shorney and Dr Rhys Thomas, without these guys I would have retired many years ago. I would like to thank the man behind all of this, Jon Jones, for trying and mostly succeeding to keep me a happy old man. His work for this club is tireless and I’m glad we could pay him back by winning the league title last year. Without my team mates, without the boys I call best friends, even family, I would have been just another player. Behind any successful captain there is always the best team, best friends, best family ever. Every teammate that has worn that special red, white and green shirt, sometimes pink, purple, blue, I will hold you close to my heart and close in my memories forever.
I think I’ve had a lucky time. I came to a club that had been struggling so there was only really one way we as a team could have gone: leagues won championships won even premierships won. It was never really my title or my wins, even winning Premiership Player of the Year last year was only done and won because of the incredible team I had around me.
So it’s with a very sad and in other ways happy heart that I leave Ebbw in the hands of the new captain, new coaches and hopefully some new fans too. It’s time to take the step and the new challenges that come with playing and coaching back at my old club Brynmawr. This decision has been the hardest decision made in my rugby life but I think it’s best for me and for the club. I’ve loved every thing that has been involved in being an Ebbw Vale Steelman.
Last and certainly the most important thank you must go to my wonderful, amazing wife who over the last seven years has been married to Ebbw Vale Steelmen, brought up our amazing daughter, put up with so many late nights, all days at rugby. Without her support I’m sure I would have never been able to do any of the above.
So signing off as your captain and player…
Damien Hudd
Chairman Jon Jones has paid the following tribute…
Having been the person who persuaded Damien to play those 2 games in the relegation season it was obvious to me that this was a player, a man who we could build our team around. I felt like I was stalking him as I continually spoke to him about coming to the club. Damien had the choice of several clubs in the Premiership and Championship but finally signed for Ebbw Vale in the middle of June 2010. From that season he grew into the captaincy of the club, saw it as an honour and wanted to lead us back to the Premiership. Despite a few set backs he never wavered in this objective and was delighted when we finally achieved this. Damien off the field is a quiet and considered person with good personal values and ethics that belied his forcefulness on the field. There are 3 moments for me that have summed up Damien and how he changed his career over the 7 seasons:
- Damien had been sent off in a game in 2010-11 and as I stood in the corridor of the Principality Stadium waiting to be called into the Hospitality suite that was that evening’s venue for the Disciplinary hearings, I casually asked him what his recent record was like and was a little surprised when he said, “Pretty good in the last two or three seasons.”
We got called in and, as we entered, the Chairman of the Panel said, “Hello Damien son, you know the drill, take your usual seat.” I was stunned, but between us we managed to get the sending of rescinded.
Five days later ,Damien was sent off in a league game. He came and saw me after the game and apologised with the words, “Sorry Jon, the boys were getting a kicking and the ref was ignoring it, so I thought I’d better sort it.” I now can’t remember the last time Damian has been sent off or yellow carded - After we had lost to a very good Pontypridd side in the Premiership, Damien again came over to me and said, “Jon I’m sorry we didn’t win, but I promise you we will be back and win this next year.” A promise he kept in some style! The only downside being a rib crushing sweaty bear hug from him as the pitch celebrations started!!
- With his knee injuries catching up with him and slowing him down on the field. Damian made the decision to change his diet and training and he did this with great commitment. This allowed him to up his game contribution and led to him being crowned Premiership Player of the Year. This is a great tribute to Damian’s mental strength and desire to be the best he could for his club.
There have been some great descriptions of Damian in press reports and opposition match programmes where he was often described as the ‘Talismanic leader of the Steelmen’, but my personal favorite was in a programme: ‘The warrior like and splendidly inked Ebbw Vale Captain’, which paid homage to his great love of tattoos as well as his ability as a rugby player.
He has been the rock on which our success has been built, a steady influence as coaches departed and I am proud to count him as a friend. I thank him for everything he has done for the club; his loyalty, friendship and I look forward to a future discussion on him coaching the Steelmen.
Chelsea football club have just seen their long time captain move on, and I would like to borrow their description of him and apply it to Damien, as I cannot think of anything more fitting. Thank you,
CAPTAIN LEADER LEGEND.
Irrespective of the outcome of the general election there are changes at the important Number 10 position in Ebbw Vale. With the departure of Josh Lewis to Bath the club has signed 2 exciting young talents to compete for the shirt.
Callum Hall is a 20 year old product of Aberdare and the Cardiff Blues Academy who has been capped by Wales at U16, 18 and 7’s levels and will bring his pacy and elusive running to Ebbw Vale to take up an opportunity that he describes as “ a privilege to pull on the shirt of a massive rugby club”. Callum is also a very good goal kicker who is comfortable in the 15 jersey and joins from Pontypridd having also had game time at Cardiff. You can see him in action here.
Callum Hall Lewis Dennett
Callum will be joined by Lewis Dennett an accomplished goal-kicker and distributor of the ball. He has spent the last few years at Hartbury College playing in the BUCS teams and also turning out for Welsh Academicals where he came to the attention of the Steelmen. With family from the Cardiff and Pontypridd area he is Welsh qualified and will be living locally. Lewis is another who can play in a few positions, 15 and 9, and he is really looking forward to testing himself with the Steelmen. You can watch Lewis here.
One of the major platforms of the Ebbw success has been the disruptive scrummaging power of the Steelmen pack. Rob Sevenoaks and Ross Jones will continue their partnership for an eight season, and fellow prop Ian George has also committed for a further season. 21year old Josh James, who impressed in the Fosters cup particularly at Pontypridd, where a first choice pack was marched backwards by a very young Ebbw 8, will join them. Josh, a Tight Head who is happy to play on the opposite head, is looking forward to more appearances after his season was disrupted by a nasty training injury.
With Gethin Robinson retiring the front row union will be completed by Dean Brooker a Bristol based front row forward who spent last season playing for Gala. Dean spent time in the Wasps Academy and has played in New Zealand and for Cornish Pirates. Standing at 6ft 2’ and 19st 10” Dean will concentrate in the tight head role but has the ability to play across the front row and will bring his scrummaging power and carrying to the team.
Dean Brooker
Joe Franchi will start favourite for the hooking role after a number of standout performances for the Steelmen. He will be joined by the evergreen Mathew “Chunky” Williams who will make a comeback from the injuries sustained last season for his 15th season as a Steelman. The second familiar face returning is that of Tredegar based Rhys Francis after completing his studies and rehabilitation from a serious knee injury. Rhys made a big impression in our debut season in the Premiership with his very strong all round game.
Leaving the club will be Jonny Bowen who came in and provided strong and committed back up after the October injury to Mathew Williams. Jonny was always a real clubman and we wish well back at the Brecon club who are expected to challenge strongly in Division 1 in the new season.
